• Bogotá to Medellín

  Saturday morning we left our hotel for the airport at the ridiculous hour of 5:30.  I said goodbye to my gringo friends, and they headed off to American Airlines while I checked in at Aires. El sábado nos tocó irnos del hotel al aeropuerto a la hora ridícula de las 5:30 a.m. Me despedí de mis amigos gringos, y ellos se fueron a American Airlines mientras yo me presenté en Aires. 

  Aires serves most of Colombia's major cities. This plane was at our gate, but wasn't ours. Aires le presta servicio a la mayoría de las ciudades importantes de Colombia. Este avión estaba en nuestra puerta, pero no era para nosotros.

  

  What we flew on was this 737. Nosotros viajamos en este 737.

  

  I paid a few dollars extra for an exit row seat. It felt like first class. The regular seats are quite cramped. Pagué unos pesos adicionales para poderme sentar en una silla junto a las puertas de emergencia. Parecía de primera clase. Los asientos normales son bastante apretados.

  
  

  In the Bogotá airport you can see ugly gray Colombian air force planes. En el aeropuerto de Bogotá se puede ver aviones grises muy feas de la fuerza aérea colombiana.

  

  The National Police have planes, too, including this cool DC-3. La Policía Nacional también tiene aviones, incluyendo este DC-3 tan vacano.

  During the half-hour flight from Bogotá to Medellín, you only cruise for about five minutes, and then you descend to skim the mountaintops and the plateau around Rionegro, where Medellín's airport is located. En el vuelo de Bogotá a Medellín, que dura media hora, sólo se vuela a velocidad de crucero unos cinco minutos, y luego se desciende para pasar rozando las montañas y la meseta de Rionegro, donde se encuentra el aeropuerto de Medellín.

  

  Right now the Rionegro area would be my first choice to locate my dream home. It's lovely lush green, altitude 7,000 feet (2125 m), a half-hour drive from Medellín. En este momento yo escogería la zona de Rionegro como la ubicación de mi casa ideal. Es un area muy verde, a 2125 metros sobre el mar, apenas a media hora de Medellín.

  We got out of our plane the old-fashioned way, with rolling ladders fore and aft. The airport has tube ramps but for some reason didn't use them for our flight. This cool plane was on the tarmac near by. Salimos del avión al estilo antiguo, usando escaleras móviles colocadas en ambas puertas del avión. El aeropuerto tiene las escalerillas pero no sé por qué no las usaron para nuestro vuelo. Esta avioneta muy chévere estaba cerquita.

  

  I caught a bus to Medellín right outside the baggage claim. I was delighted to see horses grazing at the entrance to the airport. Muy cerca de donde se retira los equipajes, me subí a un bus que iba a Medellín. Me agradó mucho ver caballos comiendo pasto en la entrada del aeropuerto.

  

  The Rionegro area is full of vacation homes. Here you can see the brick construction with few or no structural columns. Nicer homes are plastered. El área de Rionegro está llena de casas de vacaciones. En esta foto se puede ver cómo ésta fue construida con pocas columnas estructurales. Las casas más lujosas tienen revoque en las paredes.

  

  This one is for sale. Note the meticulously kept lawn. Esta la están vendiendo. Fíjese en la manga tan bien cuidada.

  

  It took half an hour to reach the outskirts of Medellín. I saw this working car that reminded me of Yonni Solberg's Ford Fiesta. Demoramos media hora en llegar a la orilla de Medellín. Vi este carro de trabajo y me hizo pensar en el Ford Fiesta de Yonni Solberg.

  

  The airport bus stops on a side street between two major hotels in Medellín. While I was waiting for my next ride, I noticed this other hotel across the street, Hotel Deseos, "Desires Hotel." I wonder what the accommodations are like? El bus del aeropuerto llega a una calle que conecta dos hoteles importantes de Medellín. Mientras esperaba que me recogieran, noté un hotel al otro lado de la calle, Hotel Deseos. Cómo serán las habitaciones?

  

  I was picked up by a friend's son-in-law, a taxi driver. We passed this lovely old car. When I was young, there were a fair number of antique cars on the streets of Medellín. Me recogió el yerno de una amiga, un taxista. Vimos este hermoso carro viejo. Cuando yo era joven había bastantes carros antiguos en las calles de Medellín. 

  

  I reached my friends' condo in the nice Poblado district of Medellín after another half hour of Saturday traffic. (It's a busy day because of shopping.) After lunch, my friends took me sightseeing (more pictures later), and that evening, we crossed the city for a party at the home of Esperanza, a friend of my sister Mez.  I got home at 1:00 a.m.  Sunday morning involved church and a visit to my old neighborhood, of which more anon. Today I will do more reminiscent sightseeing and some shopping. Llegué al apartamento de mis amigos en la linda zona de El Poblado después de otra media hora de tráfico. (Los sábados hay mucho tráfico porque la gente sale de compras.) Después de almorzar, mis amigos me llevaron a turistear (pondré más fotos después), y esa tarde cruzamos la ciudad para ir a una fiesta donde Esperanza, una amigo de mi hermana Mez. Llegué de vuelta a la 1:00 a.m. El domingo fui a la iglesia y luego a visitar el barrio en el que crecí, del cual pronto hablaré más.
