Wheels, art, and horses
In my childhood, locally made buses called chivas were common. A box full of benches on a truck chassis, basically, with a big rack on top for luggage. We traveled on them from time to time. They’re rarer now, but still around. I was able to shoot these two today, and saw a couple of others.
This one is a combination of wonderfully done artwork, some pleasant primitives, and a really horrible primitive religious painting.
I had never seen these little minichivas. There were several of them in the town of Guatapé, where we went today on a sightseeing trip. You’ve probably seen something similar in images from Asia. They’re pretty cute. As you can see, the artwork is similar to the big chivas, but the chassis is a golf cart.
There are modern buses around as well. This gives you an idea of scale.
Note the good luck horseshoes hanging behind this one.
Here’s some better religious art, a painting of María Auxiliadora.
In the town of Carmen del Viboral, we saw a lot of working horse carts. This driver is wearing a hat from the north coast.
I think these carts are being loaded at a building supply place.
They have truck leaf springs, wheels, and tires. Tienen resortes, llantas, y ruedas de camioneta.
The job requires a lot of patience. El trabajo requiere mucha paciencia.
I just noticed that all the carts are red.

Having a good trip?? Fantastic pictures!
@guestbrief -
Thank you. It has been great so far.
That’s a tiny little chiva! How much longer do you get to stay?
@ordinarybutloud -
I fly back Saturday.
@Roadkill_Spatula -
Ah. That’s soon! But on the bright side you’ll get to spend the holiday on an exciting trip away from the pressures and pitfalls of Holidays at Home.
did you ask if there is a rule that the carts have to all be red? like a union rule? interesting.
is that Timothy Robbins standing by that Mini Chiva? wow!
so, are you having a good time? where are you staying and what are you eating? inquiring minds want to know.
j.
Great pictures! You are really capturing the feel of the place.

I’m staying with friends who were students of my dad’s in the counseling program at a state university here. They have a condo in the nice part of town (walking distance to the fancy mall and fountains in my previous post). I eat what they feed me. Tonight it was pancakes. Lunch was a huge plate of typical food at a restaurant in the mountains. You’ll love the shots (whenever I get around to posting them) of the places we went today. I didn’t notice the red carts until just now. Someday I may be able to ask.
@DistantShipSmoke -
Thank you. I’m trying to shoot everything before I get used to it again and quit noticing the stuff that would be interesting to the average American.
I’m sorry to say it took me a few moments to recognise you in the fifth picture. It must be the hat.

I’m eager to see what other photographs you’ve taken, Tim. I’d love to be there, experiencing the culture.
nıce to come travelıng wıth you- wonderful to see a country that ı wıll probably never make a vısıt to. love the auto detaılıng- a lot relıgıon mıxed wıth a lot of superstıtıous hopefulness.
Love the bright colors and designs! Just wonderful. These are great photos. Hope you are having a great time. peace
Love the artwork on the vehicles. I love that in other countries there is artwork or brilliant colors on the public transportation…and not ads that are selling or promoting something.

Hope the rest of your trip goes well!
Oh…and I’m waiting for the photo of you on a donkey.
HUGS!
I really like the pictures. They tell so much about the culture. Thank you! Looks like you are having a wonderful time!
neat
Wow great pictures, are you on holiday in Mexico. Nice to see all the detail. Thanks for posting. Did you marry that nice girl from over the water?
@StephanieWall -
I haven’t married anyone, but there are nice girls here. I’m in Medellin, Colombia, after a week of working in Bogota.
@adamswomanlost -
We don’t do donkeys here. I suppose I could have gotten into a chiva for a picture, though.
OMG! these chivas are so wonderful! Reminds me of a gypsy wagon. Looks like you are having a great time.
@Roadkill_Spatula -
I was just teasin’ you. To see what you’d say. Hope the rest of your trip goes well! I have company arriving…I’m hostessing Thanksgiving for some family and some friends. It will be fun!
Their version of our VW buses!
@heart_beep -
The minichiva looks even cozier than a VW bus.
@Harpos_Mark -
I’m having a great time.
@ofunlo -
I wish I could share smells and tastes as well as images. It is a wonderful place.
@C_L_O_G -
Thanks. I’m glad you’re enjoying them. It has indeed been a great time.

Colombia has always been a Catholic bastion. I think there’s more spiritual openness now than there was when I was young, but still plenty of superstition.
Love the photos – I’m seeing travel photos all over this morning. One day I really have to take a break from painting and go look at the world. It’s hard to imagine being away from my paints for more than a day…
@oceanstarr -
You could take your paints along.
@oceanstarr -
I’d love to see what you could do with decorating a chiva.
@Roadkill_Spatula -
Somehow I think I’d never make it through the airport with a paintkit – I’d never risk it. I think the rules are too strict and the stuff is too expensive to risk. I’m nervous about airport security as it is. I have almost gotten to take on a vehicle painting project several times, but it always fell through for one reason or another. Would be great fun
Enjoyed the pictures. Love the colors!
Miss you! Hope you are back here soon!

I had a great T-day with family and friends! Finally back to Xangaing now myself.
@adamswomanlost - I’m glad your Thanksgiving was good. I had a wonderful party that night. Now I’m back, but I feel like I left my heart down there.
@zanychk - Thank you. I did not want to come back.
@Roadkill_Spatula -
Aw.
The buses are so beautiful!
@peacefulmeadow -
Thank you. I certainly enjoyed them.
Makes me feel like grabbing a chassis and making my own car lol.
