Blast from the past: 1961 in Pasto, Colombia
I'm in Siloam Springs, Arkansas, with my son, visiting my dad's widow. Last night was a big awards banquet at my parents' alma mater, John Brown University. One of the other guests came by our table to give us a CD of photos. He said he visited us in 1961 in Pasto, Colombia, and made a trip into the jungle with my dad. He gave us some amazing images from 50 years ago.
This was my family in 1961. Can you tell which is me?

We lived in the city of Pasto in the southern Andes of Colombia.

This is the Casa Evangélica, the church my dad helped pastor. We might have lived on the second floor. I'll have to ask my sisters.
My folks did some of their shopping in this market.

Ten years later at the Urbana 1970 missions conference, Bill ran into my dad and my oldest sister Christine.

Neat!
My husband lived in Venezuela for a bit in the 90s.
my guess is you're the one in the spiffy plaid jacket.
@suzyQ_darnit - We had never seen this family picture before today. My sisters were delighted. The collection included photos of other families that we knew in Colombia, so a lot of people are happy on Facebook today.
@promisesunshine - I've always had refined fashion sense.
@Foodhog - I've never been in Venezuela. Some of my Colombian childhood friends worked over there for years, until Chavez ran the economy into the ground.
What a wonderful surprise for you and nice thing for him to do!
These are remarkable photos -- film cameras, 50 years old, etc. What a treasure your frient provided!
Cool photos and what wonderful memories these old photos are.
I think you are the blonde boy being held by your Father.
Are you having flashbacks now? These pics are amazing! I'd say you're the towhead being held by your father.
Definitely the boy in his father's arms. You had the look then and you still have it now!
I guessed too. Of course, the fact that most of them were wearing dresses made it easier. Let's see, in 1961, our oldest was over a year, and our 2nd child was born in Jan. of that year. We lived in Stanton, CA. at the time, 3 miles south of Knott's Berry Farm. That's back when it was free and before they had the amusement park.
Love these! Yes, we lived on the second story. On the ground floor was the church space, plus a patio, the room where Doña Catalina pulled teeth & performed other medical tasks, a guest room, & (I think) the maids' rooms. I remember the surroundings as being a lot more urban--I think if the photo had been taken FROM the building rather than looking toward it, that would be the case.
The market vendors sold mostly root vegetables, plantains, & corn, which is why all their wares could be on the ground.

Great photos to treasure.
@slmret - @whyzat - @Grannys_Place - @StephanieWall - @Kellsbella - @ata_grandma - Thank you. I have only the vaguest memories of Pasto; my earliest memories are of our move to Puerto Asís, a day's travel east into the jungle. But we made occasional trips back to Pasto, so I remember a few things. I visited again in 1979, 1981, and 1983, and of course it was quite different by then except for the amazing mountains. I wish I could make a grand tour of places we lived, with my siblings and our kids.
@Inciteful - Yes, this is a real treasure trove! I had no idea the man was going to give us these.
you were such a little tyke. you growed up fine.
OMG those are amazing :O what a great surprise must have been looking at this so many years from then :D
I haven't been to Colombia but my brother says it's the prettiest country in the whole World, I've read so much about it though, I think I'd have to agree with him. Thanks a lot for sharing this sweet images of your family :3
@plantinthewindow - I survived. Thrived, even.
@xXxlovelylollipop - Thank you. These photos were a wonderful surprise. Colombia would be a great tourist destination if they could deal with their security problems.
@Roadkill_Spatula - comming from where i come I don't think their security issues could discourage me hahaha
@xXxlovelylollipop - The cities are all reasonably safe, and the north coast has been okay for a few years. There are places that would be great for ecotourism but that have a lot of guerrilla presence. Probably not that different from Guatemala or Mexico. Better than Mexico, actually, because the cities are safe.
@Roadkill_Spatula - I'd want to go to Cartagena de Indias, my very favorite book takes place in there. You gotta love Garcia Marquez.
