  • Posting just to post

I haven’t felt much like posting for a couple of weeks. Stress is happening:

    • My Dallas house has a buyer but needs a new roof.
    • Insurance will take care of it. (Yay.)
    • Alicia thinks I settled for too low a bid from the buyers.
    • My lake house is vacant and I’m getting papers together for a realtor.
    • Money is tight. Three mortgages to pay plus accumulated bills from weddings, moves, etc.
    • Lots of doctor visits (not critical, but important).
    • Alicia’s in a constant struggle to come up with money for her son’s school expenses.
    • Her son’s visa runs out at the end of this month. I’m trying to get an extension, although I doubt he’d come in any case.
    • I’m leaving on a two-week business trip this Sunday. (Anyone in DC/north VA or Houston that wants to meet me or us?)
    • I’m hoping to fly Alicia to Houston during my stay there.
    • Two sinkholes developed a few miles from our house. Alicia is worried.
    • No progress on refinishing my new desk.
    • We go to the gym four-five times a week. Major progress in my endurance.
    • No progress on my weight. I think it’s the popcorn we eat while we watch movies.
    • Not enough sleep during the week.
    • Trouble staying awake at work.
    • Tampa traffic sucks.
    • Gas is 15 cents cheaper in St. Petersburg than in Valrico. One of the few upsides of a long commute.
    • Sold our old dining set on Craigslist. The buyer gave us an extra $100 to deliver it 90 miles away. Nice drive and the perfect buyer.
    • Now we need chairs for our fancy new table, or to sell it and buy a full dining set.
    • Garage is only 2/3 full of boxes now.
    • Anyone want to buy a medium-size English wardrobe?
    • Haven’t found my TV antenna yet, so we went to the in-laws’ yesterday evening to watch news about Chavez’s death.
    • Heat system buzzes constantly over my cube.
    • I had no idea until I got married that I have strong opinions about how many, many things should be:
      • Scissors must be stored CLOSED!
      • We DON’T need the bathroom window open in 40-degree weather!
      • The soap pump should be right against the sink, not six inches away.
      • Handkerchiefs should be folded in half, then into a square, then in half again… not into a long narrow rectangle.
      • Etc. etc. etc.
    • I’m stressed but I’m still in contention for Happiest Man in the World.
Hoping you are the same, I remain,
    Truly yours,
    Tim

  • I had to Google “sink hole.”

    Otherwise, yay.
Wait, Tim, you do woodworking! Yes you do! I’m planning on building a steamer trunk. The instructions say red oak. I’m staining it all black and mahogany (at best) anyway. Are there comparable woods that are cheaper/better to work with/more common? Is using selects for something like this all right, or do I really need FAS? Where would you buy wood? Home Depot? … Sorry to hijack your post.

  • well. you can’t undo the agreement with the buyers, so i say let that stress go.  the potentially lowball price means the house is sold and you don’t have to juggle that mortgage or worry anymore.  well worth it.
of course you have strong opinions about things.  that’s healthy.  i’ve been married nearly 22 years and my husband still does things wrong.  :)

  • I heard on the news about a man dieing when his bedroom fell into a sink hole.  Scary.

Remember to breathe and things will not always be this way.  They will get better and you just have to walk through this right now.  These are all learning lessons.

  • Hope that the visa can be renewed (doesn’t your marriage ensure that it will?)

Looks like you have been living too long as a bachelor and not folding your hankerchiefs right

At least only two people in history have been hurt by sinkholes fortunately most people get a warning the empending doom is coming.

  • hopefully you won’t have many 40 degree days…our hankies are folded in the long rectangle form and come in a box that say’s Kleenex  your right on about the scissors and soap.  It’s good to hear from the happiest man in the world again!

  • I saw the sink hole story online. Didn’t somebody warn you how marriage changes a person?  And although you have a lot on your plate, it’s always good to remember who shares your life with you now, and who helps to make you that happy, full-filling man. (Hope we can meet one day as well……)

  • @Finity - Other hardwoods (like birch) might be easier to work with than oak but are going to cost as much. I mostly work with pine, myself. The top-grade pine at Lowe’s or Home Depot is much cheaper than oak and is smooth and knot-free. You’ll have to check prices to see whether the price difference is worth it. The grain won’t look like oak, though, so it partly depends on how opaque your stains are and what you want it to look like.

  • @Roadkill_Spatula - I’m not really falling over myself to have fancy grain patterns. It’s going to be a piece of wood. I want it to hold up. No one’s going to be admiring the ribbing… right? Am I completely out of my depth here?

  • I’ve been posting just to post all week. Does it show?

Getting rid of a house fast seems like a major plus in this economy.

I think most of us have strong opinions. Marriage is a miracle.

  • ha.  I could have told you about your strong opinions about how things should be.  not a bad thing – I’ve just noticed.

so many in Venezuela love Chavez.  I’m curious as to what Alicia’s opinion is of him.  ?
you do seem very busy and stressed.  I hope you get your properties sold, and soon.

  • all interesting stuff. am pondering your question. i’m reclusive.

  • Sink holes are pretty scary.  I lived near Tampa for a while.  Amazing the things you learn about your preferences when you start to share your living space!

  • That’s a lot on your plate. And, most of us can identify with it. Keep a stiff upper lip.

  • Aw. Life is life, isn’t it?! There will always be stress. Just so so SO glad you are happy!!!
My best to you and Alicia…always rest in the love you have for each other…and everything else will work itself out.
    HUGS!!!

  • You absolutely have got to focus on getting the right amount of sleep, a great many of your other problems will fade away! I keep telling myself that… but apparently I still am not getting the right amount of sleep either

  • The lack of sleep and the sinkholes are worrisome to me.  It’s not that the others are any less stressful.  You certainly have a lot of things on your mind and I hope you find some quiet time to sort through all of them.  Good luck.

  • Real estate is moving. I hope you do well there Tim. I hope your properties sell soon. Sinkholes are the pits! Doesn’t help to worry about them. Hope all things in your life improve soon. Hugs.

  • Good luck with everything and stay positive!

  • I thought about you when reading of the sink hole — glad you’re both ok — but keep watch for development of another!  Otherwise this list glows with progress.  Glad you’re happy!

  • I was thinking in Celsius, but I have to think Fahrenheit and than makes sense to have the window close for the heat.

Sinkholes must be scary too. There is no other way to get the Visa for her son?   i hope you found a solution for this.

  • @adamswomanback - No way! Carolyn’s back???!!! Jubilation! Exultation! An abundance of smileys and punctuation!!!!!!

  • @carlo - Yeah, sorry about not specifying Fahrenheit. I should have added (5 C).

  • Wow… That’s a lot of stuff. You make me feel a lot better about my stress list! I agree about the scissors, but I will not abide liquid soap in a bathroom in my house.
Nice to hear about the gym. I’ve been doing endurance training using the baby as a weight…

  • @promisesunshine - Most of the amount I conceded I would have spent with another month’s mortgage and insurance, so I don’t feel bad at all about the deal. The realtor insisted on a low listing price in the first place because of comps. Prices have been low and there have been foreclosures. But I’m very glad to get a buyer within a few weeks of listing it. I just hope the lake house sells soon! That realtor said nothing had sold in the area for years.

  • @Grannys_Place - Yeah, we’ll be all right. Once I get the houses sold, I’ll get caught up on my debts, and once Alicia develops a social network and website here, she’ll be able to sell the jewelry she brought.

@Finity - I have no idea what your background is with tools and wood, but if it’s your first time, you might want to go with cheaper materials. Although I suspect that you do well at anything you tackle. There’s not much that is funner than carpentry. Post pictures! Where did you get your design?

  • @ZSA_MD - Thank you. Sinkholes are indeed scary. I’m not too worried, but it isn’t anything I can control except to watch for warning signs.

I’m delighted that my house is selling this quickly, and I hope the lake house will move as well. If the stock market stays high, real estate ought to follow.

Alicia mentioned you again a couple of days ago, and said she had been thinking about you and to give you her greetings.

  • @Roadkill_Spatula - Haha. Thanks. I’m not sure it works that way exactly when it comes to things I can’t fix if I re-do them enough. My background is minimal. My boyfriend allegedly has experience with woodworking and my dad in fact has experience with carving (which I realize is really not the same). I’m pretty sure they’ll be doing most of the work and I’ll be largely on pickup.

I got my design here: http://mysqlweb.myftp.org/Woodworking/Plans/WJ111_Steamer_Trunk.pdf and I’m modifying the lid as per this page (so I can use it as a table or storage or something in a smaller apartment in the future): http://www.thewoodwhisperer.com/videos/82-duanes-steamer-trunk-pt-1/ .
Here’s hoping that if I follow instructions to a T, it’ll turn out all right.

  • @PPhilip - Ironically, the house in Seffner had been inspected by a sinkhole specialist a year ago. He said there was no risk. Fortunately our bedroom is on the second floor…

The latest communication from the Embassy is that Alicia’s son can come later but he’ll need a new medical exam and consular interview. Considering how upset he was with the medical exam last October (having to take his clothes off for a female doctor, getting vaccinations), I don’t think he’d be willing to do it. In any case, in his present state of mind he isn’t interested in coming to the US.

  • @plantinthewindow - Most of the people I know in Colombia didn’t like Chavez. And most of them greatly appreciated Colombia’s former president Uribe, because he made vast improvements in the country’s safety and pushed the guerrillas back into the jungle. Uribe’s a controversial figure (my sisters detest him). The current president was in his cabinet (minister of defense) and is not nearly as popular because he’s more conciliatory with Venezuela and is negotiating with Colombia’s guerrillas. Security is slipping in the rural areas.

A plumber once told me, very sincerely, “The people wanted Uribe to run for another term, but it wasn’t allowed by the inst… rest… prostitution.”

  •          The only thing on this long list to really stress about (it scares me) is the sink hole – and there isn’t any thing you can do about that. Sounds like life is pretty good, actually. Hint: buy a those little packages of kleenix (or fold your own handkercheifs), his and hers scissors – or a pair that has a holder and must be closed to fit inside, a bar of soap and a soap dish. I mean, really.

My regards to Alicia. When are you coming to New England?

  • @Finity - Gorgeous! I think I’d use cedar, myself. It looks lovely when it’s sanded, and it’ll protect the contents against moths. You have to be careful choosing your pieces because it splits easily, but it’s not hard to work with. I built an outdoor cedar TV cabinet a year ago.

  • @SandraErickson - We have soap dishes. She doesn’t keep those by the sink either. The scissors are in a drawer in the kitchen.

    Life is indeed good.

  • @SherylM - @Inciteful - @Aloysius_son - @ElusiveWords - @boricua_chic_2008 - @armnatmom - Life is quite good. My stressors are minor. I’m delighted to have my house sell this quickly, and once it’s off my back I’ll have less financial pressure. I have a hunch the lake house will sell well, too.

  • @Roadkill_Spatula - Oooh! That’s pretty! And close to the stain color I’d like. :) What was the stain? And when you say it’s prone to splitting, does that mean it’s also prone to not lasting as long? What should I look for in the pieces? Just avoid cracks?

  • @Roadkill_Spatula - When the Wusband and I first moved in together, I would move the furniture a little bit each day: at 6 inches he would notice and move it all back. At forty he had been a batchelor all his life and ANY kind of change was difficult for him. Poor man married the queen of change – whatever was he thinking? ((laughing)) it is much better for him now that he lives upstairs, and the only common space is the kitchen. I still make him crazy, but at least it is just one room, now.

  • I’m glad for all the good things happening in your life.  As for the stress, I relate all too well.

  • That is a long list! But yay for soon getting free of the one mortgage, & for working out regularly, & for still finding yourself happy-happy.

Handkerchiefs??? Amazing! They should be folded to fit your pocket, so I’m guessing square is best. As for soap, yes, it should be as close to the faucet as possible so people aren’t dripping water all over the counter.

I guess you can’t wear earplugs at work, since (as far as I know) you do a lot of listening/transcribing. But when you can, I would recommend them! Increase the peace.

Lots of love to you both.

  • @lonelywanderer2 - Thank you. Once the house sells, I’m sure I’ll feel more relaxed.

  • @Finity - It usually splits during the drying process if it’s going to split. Look carefully at the boards when you’re buying, especially at the ends. Once you build with it, it’s probably all right, but if you have inset panels in the walls of your trunk, it might be a good idea to leave edges unglued to let it shrink without splitting. I suspect that for indoor use splitting is not likely to be a problem.

I mixed two colors to come up with that tone. I don’t remember the names; one was a cherry or mahogany, and the other was more of a pine. If I were building it for myself, I would use a light tone (or varnish) because I love the natural color of cedar. A lot of stains are one-step finishes now, so make sure you get the kind you want to work with. I like my finish to be separate from the stain, in case I need to modify the color after the first stain application.

  • @Roadkill_Spatula - I think we’re doing it the old-fashioned way with the grooves and the nails, without glue. Will that make a difference with splitting? I’m also pretty sure we’ll be building outside because of fumes and such. How much shrinking are we talking here?

Also, I’m not entirely sold on not painting the entire thing black, so there’s that… Thanks for the stain/finish tip!

  • @Finity - Glue has been used in furniture for hundreds of years. I can’t imaging building furniture without it. There really shouldn’t be much shrinkage unless the piece is outdoors or you have a very very dry apartment.

  • @Roadkill_Spatula - Unregulated radiators in old NYC apartments do crazy things. Duly noted re: glue. I didn’t see any in the materials list, though.

  • @Finity - The plans describe using glue, so I guess they forgot to include it in supplies.

  • @Roadkill_Spatula - Whoops… good thing I have a bottle of Elmer’s… Kidding… (or would that work?)

  • @Finity - It’s best if you get wood glue. Basically souped-up Elmer’s. You can also use polyurethane glue (Gorilla Glue), as long as you’re careful in using it.

  • @Roadkill_Spatula - I meant the Elmer’s Wood Glue.

  • @Finity - That will work fine.

  • @Roadkill_Spatula - Yay! One ingredient down. A gajillion to go…

  • @Roadkill_Spatula - Enjoyed your poem here in your comment to me!!! Of course, you know I love the !!!!’s and the ‘s!!!

  • @adamswomanback - What does the green smiley mean? Happy but seasick? Joyful zombie?

  • That’s a lot to be stressed about, and all are very real worries. I love that you see your happy marriage as overriding it all. I can relate…we put a house under contract in our new duty area and have yet to sell the current house.

  • @Roadkill_Spatula - I’m definitely a joyful Zombie!!!

  • Finance in thelow pointgivesstress butyou will manage, well, TimandAlicia. D not worrty too much and jkeep high spirit .When you will sold  your two houses things will be doing better, of course.
weight is due to the stress and  popcorn is also one of the causes ?. This way to eat constantly blown corn  spreads also in France . Young people eat popcorn in watching movies ! Scrch! screch. I don’ t like this

  • RYC : The wood of the stair case is probably old oak . It is a strong wood that is 80 years old like the house  and the color becomes brown “red” .but I am not sure 100 per cent .

  • I definitely believe in storing scissors in the closed position.
